The Garden Route is a popular stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa. It stretches from Heidelberg in the Western Cape to the Storms River, which is crossed along the N2 coastal highway over the Paul Sauer Bridge in the extreme western reach of the neighbouring Eastern Cape.
The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here, and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. Along the Garden Route are such It includes towns such as Mossel Bay, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley,; with George, the Garden Route’’s largest city and main administrative centre.

The Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and Temperate Forest, and offer hiking trails and eco-tourism activities. The Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour is a unique eco-wilderness adventure that takes place in the magnificent Tsitsikamma indigenous rainforest. The first of its kind in Africa, the canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30 metres above the forest floor.
Most platforms are located in giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees. The scenery and bird life is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the 2½ to 3 hours it takes to descend.
The concept of guiding people through the upper canopy of a rainforest originated in Costa Rica, where adventurous biologists devised new methods to access the forest canopy in order to conduct research on the undiscovered canopy ecosystem. The idea soon developed into a breathtaking form of eco-tourism that allowed people to enter and experience a previously inaccessible natural environment.

Monkeyland and Birds of Eden
Monkeyland is the world’s first multi-species free-roaming primate sanctuary, renowned throughout the world for its rehabilitation work. Visitors are offered the opportunity to join a one-hour safari. Here, you can expect to see many species of monkeys, apes and lemurs living as they should – free and in a forested habitat.
Monkeyland is a unique primate sanctuary and the top eco-tourism attraction on the Garden Route, capturing the hearts of visitors thanks to its efforts to rehabilitate and free previously caged primates. The residents here are free to move about the forest and do so most harmoniously. The transfer of information about these fascinating creatures enhances your visit to the sanctuary during a safari. The safaris are conducted by multi-lingual game rangers and are fun, exciting and educational. Guests leave the sanctuary with a greater understanding of the primates of the world and the threats they are facing.
Birds of Eden is the Garden Route’s very own world-class free-flight bird sanctuary.
Birds of Eden is the world’s largest free-flight aviary and incorporates an indigenous forest with waterfalls and elevated walkways. Previously caged birds from every corner of the globe live here in free flight. This is not somewhere you want to rush through, so allow enough time to soak up the splendour.
The unique two-hectare dome (the world’s largest) spans over a gorge of indigenous forest. The sanctuary has its own mysterious ruin, which incorporates a walk-behind waterfall. Another feature is its amphitheatre, which can accommodate more than 200 visitors. Like Monkeyland, the popular primate sanctuary next door, Birds of Eden boasts its own canopy walk. While shorter than the 128-metre bridge in Monkeyland, it hangs above the clouds.
The decision to develop Birds of Eden stemmed from the need to create a safe environment in which to release a large collection of free-flight African birds and miniature monkeys. The sanctuary also enables bird owners to apply to release their pet birds into the sanctuary after they have undergone rehabilitation. More than 3,500 birds currently live at the sanctuary.

Choose Your Preferred Area
South Africa is a vast country and there are many golf courses to choose from. Clearly you won’t be able to visit them all, so start by choosing your preferred area of the country.
For example, you could head to the Western Cape and visit Cape Town, or travel to Limpopo Province. One of the best options is to stay in a hotel that also has an excellent golf course, and that way you get the whole package in one. One option is the Oubaai Hotel, Golf & Spa, which is on the Garden Route. The course is surrounded by beautiful scenery with the Outeniqua Mountains nearby. It’s also just a few minutes from George Airport, making it very easy to reach.
Here you will find the first signature golf course by Ernie Els in the country. It’s over 6,000 metres long, and it looks out over the Indian Ocean, making it a popular option.
Plan Other Things to See During Your Holiday

- Go on a safari in Kruger National Park
- Head to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town
- Visit Nelson Mandela’s cell on Robben Island
- Visit the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg
- Go on a wine tour
- Go on a tour of the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn
